Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
