Air Travel Restarts at Edinburgh Airport After Major Control Tower IT Issue

Planes on the tarmac at the Scottish hub
An IT issue at Edinburgh's ATC meant all flights could arrive or depart from the facility.

Flight operations have resumed at Scotland's primary international airport following a significant technical issue at the control tower brought the international hub to a standstill.

All incoming and outgoing flights were suspended because of an IT issue that was reported at approximately 08:30.

A number of travelers reported being stuck in planes on the runway during the disruption.

Operations Restart with Continued Disruption

A statement indicated at 10:40 that services were back online, and thanked passengers for their "cooperation and patience".

That said, ongoing issues are likely to affect schedules. Flights to London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been axed, with a host of additional flights facing hold-ups.

An airport representative had earlier anticipated that dozens of flights could be disrupted.

"Flyers are asked to get in touch with their carrier for the most up-to-date details on their individual travel plans," was the consistent advice.

Source of the Issue

The problem was traced to the operational halt to an technical fault with its control tower systems vendor.

Flyers should still plan to confirm the details of their journey before traveling to the terminal as knock-on effects are managed.
