Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
