Scorching conditions and raging wildfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

These conditions follow recent bushfires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for the coming days in parts of South Australia and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure shifts eastward, delivering intense sunshine to a broad swath of the region.

The combination of extremely dry vegetation and relentless high temperatures presents a volatile scenario for firefighters.

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into blackout last week after powerful winds compromised the city’s electrical network, with falling trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant transport delays at a key airport, where hundreds of air services were cancelled.
