Hardline Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile Next Leader.

Following a conclusive second-round vote, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.

A Commanding Win

After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Platform Built On Law and Order and Immigration

Known for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to tackle growing crime and drastically reduce immigration.

He consistently cited migrants, notably the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.

His plans envisioned U.S.-style measures such as constructing detention centers, border walls, electric fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northernmost frontier.

Amid a Regional Wave

Several observers interpret Kast's win as part of a wider conservative wave in Latin America, similar to recent electoral wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other analysts additionally frame it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right-wing leadership since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Leading Lacking a Clear Majority

Despite his sweeping popular vote triumph, Kast does not have an absolute majority in Congress, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when all right-leaning parties are combined together.

This legislative landscape may hinder his agenda, including a vow to cut public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not provided concrete steps.

"We have several questions about what a Kast administration will look like that remain unclear because he has not explained his methods for implement them," commented a political professor.

The professor continued, "Regarding economic policy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures associated with the right. However the area with much less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his central theme throughout the race."
