Rampant Heart of Midlothian Outclass Struggling Celtic to Extend Eight Points Ahead
Match summary
- Hearts' attacking duo earn Hearts win and propel them eight points clear at the top
- Callum McGregor equalized early Murray own goal
- Hearts extend 13 games without defeat for the first occasion in over two decades
Rampant Hearts surged eight ahead of their Glasgow rivals at the top of the Scottish top flight to strengthen their early title credentials and worsen the malaise around the Celtic team.
Alexandros Kyziridis' fine strike and a spot-kick from Shankland gave the Hearts team a 3-1 lead that the reigning champions could not recover from.
Dane Murray - one of three youngsters in the Celtic starting lineup - scored an own goal early on to put the home side ahead at a bouncing Tynecastle, and it was the youngster's infringement that led to the penalty.
Callum McGregor's classy first goal of the season had swiftly equalized the first goal, and the Swedish attacker almost put Rodgers' team in front, opting for finesse over power and allowing the Hearts keeper to make a crucial stop.
But the unstoppable Hearts side seized control again to consign the visitors to successive league defeats for the initial occasion since last year.
It also gives the Hearts a significant lead at the top of the table.
The previous occasion they were this far ahead was in the 2005-2006 season under their former manager, when they ultimately finished second - a rare instance that a team has not secured the title after building such an advantage in the past 27 years.
McInnes, whose Aberdeen side were runners-up to the champions on multiple times, has been at pains to downplay championship discussions, as the club seek their first top-flight crown since the 1960s.
Rodgers has experienced this previously at Celtic - both perfect and shaky beginnings to a season. He's never ended as runner-up.
But on Sunday's evidence, this Hearts team showed they deserve serious consideration.
Analysis: Hearts Take Advantage of Weakened The Visitors
Hearts started with the self-assurance of a side undefeated in the league this season - the popular attacker delivered a ball for Shankland to stab wide.
The Glasgow team didn't help themselves with some uncharacteristic carelessness in possession and they faltered under their first real examination.
A headed effort from Braga was tipped onto the woodwork by Kasper Schmeichel and Shankland's return ball was diverted goalwards by the hapless defender, in for the absent center-back.
The away side grew into the contest and started building moves. From a flowing attack, the midfielder released Tierney to set up McGregor, who slotted home.
Apart from the opportunity for Nygren, the visitors found it hard to generate chances for lone frontman Jonny Kenny or his substitute Yamada amid the absence of stricken attackers Kelechi Iheanacho and Daizen Maeda.
The home team rediscovered their energy and versatility in attacking from across the final third. Kyziridis, a standout performer of the club's relationship with shareholder Tony Bloom's Jamestown Analytics, fired a low shot past the goalkeeper from the edge of the box.
Almost straight away, Murray tripped the midfielder in the right side of the box and the penalty taker scored. And it could've been an even more handsome win, had substitute Ageu not been denied by the shot-stopper.
The visitors' performance after the break was somewhat summed up in a couple of moments involving big-money recruit Engles.
The set-piece from Engles delivery was in sharp opposition to his European display in the continental victory over their Austrian opponents and the Belgium international was then booked for a cynical foul.
What They Said
Hearts head coach Derek McInnes: "You see how hard the players work, the togetherness. That's not always enough to win games week in, week out.
"Our strength lies in, is good technical ability. You're witnessing it from multiple individuals who have been here before. Some of the new signings are keen to demonstrate their quality.
"We're in a positive moment at the minute, but it's just one win. It's crucial for us to keep winning. We've got much work ahead, plenty to improve. Following the initial fixtures is normally an indication of your standing."
The Celtic boss: "It's a really poor goal from our perspective. We failed to push up when the ball went back as a defensive unit so when they play it, they ought to be caught offside but didn't. We have got to do better with the shot.
"Plenty of matches to play for. It's only the beginning. It's only nine games in. Clearly, being eight points behind is not ideal. The positive is there's numerous fixtures to play.
"We now have to focus on the present and look to find more consistency and more quality in our play."
Upcoming Fixtures for Both Sides?
The Glasgow club are back at home on midweek against newly-promoted Falkirk (19:45 GMT). At the same time in the top division, Hearts are at St Mirren.
