The Former French President Set to Write Prison Memoir Chronicling Three Weeks Behind Bars

The ex-president of France is preparing a memoir this autumn titled A Prisoner’s Diary, which recounts the period served in jail.

This news emerged just 11 days after Sarkozy left prison while he contests the guilty verdict related to illegal collaboration connected to efforts to acquire presidential race money provided by the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Inner Thoughts

“Inside jail visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he notes in one passage, suggesting the book is more about his reflections from isolation as opposed to a broader observation of the packed and struggling French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing in that facility, where one hears a lot to hear,” he continues. “The noise is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is fortified behind bars.”

Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, the former leader had appeared by video link from his cell, describing his time inside as draining. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this difficult experience manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It leaves a mark all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

Sarkozy, who led the nation from 2007 to 2012, was the first past president from the EU and the first leader since WWII of France to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he would use his time to compose an account.

Reading Material

It remains unclear whether he had time to read and critique the three books he had in his cell: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail later flees to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

He was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom in the Paris jail in Paris. Guards stayed in an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted just yogurt while inside due to concerns prison cuisine might have been spat on. Although he had access to cook for himself but refused this, as per accounts. Unclear remains if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who saw him regularly daily throughout the jail term, told the release hearing his safety would improve outside jail than inside. “He has faced death threats, has heard screaming at night and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Case Background

Sarkozy went to prison on 21 October after a Paris court sentenced him to a half-decade term on conspiracy charges related to a plan to acquire campaign funds for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial is scheduled for next spring.
