The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
