The acclaimed documentarian is now considered more than a filmmaker; he is a brand, an unparalleled production entity. With each new project heading for the television, everybody wants a part of him.

Nevertheless, the lack of surviving participants, photography and newsreels forced Burns and his team to lean heavily on historical documents, combining the first-person voices of nearly 200 individual historic figures.
